topic posted Thu, December 29, 2005 - 11:39 AM by  Alix
I was hoping if anybody had any advice for an Artist who is just begining to sell art on Ebay? (I tried once for a month to sell 2 pieces and dint get any botes so I gave up.. but I'd like to try again....)

I was hoping to sell 24x36 giclee on canvas prints (as limited editions) on Ebay .. Does anybody have any recommendations? What is ACEO (i saw postings about it?)

Is this a useful place to sell art? Has anybody been able to create a part-time income from selling Art on Ebay? Any info / advice would be most appreciated !

I hope to start this too. So, I'd like to see others replies, but from what I've gathered myself, so far, is that Esty might be better than ebay as it specializes in art, and ACEO's (which I do plan on getting into) are Art Card Editions and Originals. It's a spin off of ATC's Art Trading Cards, which are 2.5" x 3.5" and are miniature works of art that you can trade with people (ATC) or sell on ebay (ACEO) as a good way to get your work and your name out there. Also a cool way to collect art from people without breaking the bank.

ebay used to be great for me (I started selling there in 8/02). It's been going downhill for original art, however. Ebay is moving towards an overstock/mass produced market and the amount of sweatshop art to wade through is staggering.

Not to discourage you from trying it. People do still sell there. It just isn't what it used to be.

etsy specializes in crafts more than art but people do sell there. If you do a lot of mixed media or hand-crafted items, it could be a good venue.

Another venue to try is www.artbyus.com artbyus is run by artists. If you sign up, enter the code wcnofinal. It is free now but, if they start charging in the future, the code locks in a cut rate.

If you haven't sold much online before, ABU might give you a little more experience at no cost.

You can also set up a free gallery at www.fine-art.com

Remember a couple things...in this slow market, your pieces may sell for the opening bid so keep it high enough that you won't be disappointed or lose money and, most importantly, sales are not an indication of quality (they are usually an indication of visibility/marketing). If your work doesn't sell, don't take it as a reflection on your work.

1: start small . Let yourself sell some very low-ticket items the first few weeks to bring in some collectors.
2: search out other pieces like yours on eBay. Find the ones with the most bids and use some of the same keywords in the auction title and list int he same categories.
3: LOTS of pictures throughout the listings. Don't be afraid to use a little HTML in order to get nice sized images in the listing, instead of just in the lame little area at th bottom of the listing.
4: DO make it a gallery listing. Ther are many, many buyers who only click on auctions wth image previews
5: be descriptive and creative with the description. Tell a little story about each piece. It grabs buyers' attention and makes your work more appealing. A big part of selling on eBay is marketing.

If you're smart and a little patient with your listings, you can make a nice bit of money (not to mention getting global exposure) selling your work on eBay!

fill out your about me page and promote your auctions on other sites (like blogs).
You'll be surprised where you attract bidders!

Doesn't the gallery feature cost something like $25?

The gallery feature is 35 cents. It is the little thumbnail image that eBay puts in the auction listings.

Adding the gallery picture is only .35. There is a Gallery Featured that is 19.95 but no one uses that.

If you're just starting out on ebay, you might want to buy some small things first, just to get the feel of it. If you search ACEO on ebay, there are lots of collectible art cards that don't cost much. Or, for nonart, you can buy books or videos. It will also give you some positive feedback.

Thanks, I guess I got them confused.

No, I'm an old ebay addict, plenty of feedback, just haven't used it recently because I haven't had any money to buy with or gotten around to putting up some things to sell.

I hope to start putting some ACEOs of my own up on ebay.

I've gotten way too attached to my current full sized painting, and feel, again, I will be unable to part with it.

I've had that same problem with large paintings, the more time I spend makin' um the more I want to keep um. Not such a problem with ACEO's. Plus the ACEO's are easier to sell, I've been selling them since april 2005 and I make a steady income. Of course it's a part time jobs income even though I work full time, but hey, it's worth it to do what I love!

I really want to start doing ACEOs, but so far, my biggest problem is the canvases. My sister gave me a lot of baseball cards, but I need to get glue to glue them together, and I used up all my gesso priming my board books.

I considered buying a set of pre-cut business cards, but that seems a bit much, since the stack of baseball cards was only 37 cents.

I'm also getting a major case of intimidation from looking at the results I get from searching under ACEO on ebay.

I wouldn't go with the business cards if I were you since business cards are not usally 2.5" X 3.5" which is the size it has to be to be an ACEO. I recommend just using thick paper and cutting it to 2.5" X 3.5" pieces. I use 140lb to 200lb acid free watercolor paper (i'm kinda a stickler for quality, cause I want all my work to be very professional). You could really use any paper that's 70lb or heavier, well I guess it kinda depends on what medium you were going to use and how archival you want it to be. You could use the canvas too, some people actually sell them floppy (no backing) although it does seem weird to call it a "card" in that case but as long as you state it in your auction I don't think it matters to most people since most people put them in albums anyway. Personally I never do canvas cause the texture on such a small format makes it more difficult to get good detail.

You might also want to join the ACEO ~ Art Cards Editions and Originals group under eBay groups (you can find that on ebay under communities) they have 2000+ members and the group's got tuns of useful info and they're all really nice and encouraging to newbies!

There is a new auction site for ACEOs:

                    www.art-cards.org/auction

It's free to list there (no listing OR FVFs). It just started on Monday. I put most of mine up there (I list there under laurali and on ebay under iversongallery).

There were some sites where you could buy ACEO stock & supplies but I couldn't find them. I will keep looking. I started out cutting my own matboard from scraps. I heard some art stores will give you mat scraps for free. I bought 100 pieces of pre-cut matboard from a friend. She had a bunch cut up all at once. I am still working through that.

I suggest, something else....go to www.cafepress.com and check out this site. There are sites like this available on line, and they do most everything for you, ebay is a tough one. You can get burned really easy there, by the customer, and in your pocket. Fees can easily get out of control, and it is very difficult to get noticed.

The only thing I'd say about cafepress that you forgot to mention is the pricing problems. To make any money, you've got to mark your items up over the preset price, which is already pretty high on most items, and then they still take a percentage cut on top of that. It can take a person a real long time to get any money when they're only getting $3 a t-shirt, and the t-shirts are selling for close to $20 or more.
