I donated several pieces for the 9-11 relief fund - and it was a good thing -

I donated one of my new orleans cats series already. 100% donation and sold for $561. That felt great.

Actually, the New Orleans series is a lot different than my normal folk art cats. More pop art and funky so it's a different group that buys them. There was only 5 different people bidding on the charity one, 3 being usual customers for the other folk art but they said it wasn't for the painting, but more for the charity. I thought that was super cool. I never thought it would go that high! I was teary-eyed when it went to $100, then gleeful when it went to $200. At $300 I was beyond words then it jumped to $500 and I was basically sobbing. lol I tell you, I felt so so good to see that people cared enough to bid that high. I could never have afforded to donate that much money personally without the help of the bidders.

I won't know if the New Orleans series would sell for that otherwise now because I can't bring myself to paint them for a personal profit. =|

I won't list on eBay through MissionFish. There are too many serious problems. Among the many, they've lost three of my recent donations. They have the money (it was on my credit card) but the donations are not on My MissionFish. They have been "looking into it" for a couple weeks now. They ignored me for over a week, then waited until after Katrina hit and said I should be understanding of the delay while they deal with the crisis. I happened to catch these three but now I wonder if they've lost others.

I am listing all my charity auctions on www.artbyus.com I might list some on eBay but only if I can get a letter directly from the charities and not list through missionfish.

Yeah I was a bit disappointed with mf. My auction wasn't showing up after it had ended and I read something about, "24 hours blah blah blah", so I emailed them and said wtf. I received an email back about how the IT guys would figure out what was wrong. The next day it showed up money was due. I don't like how long it takes, but I didn't know how else to do donate so ...

Mine wasn't due to the 24-hour delay. These were missing after I paid them, and for a couple weeks. They had the site down a lot over the weekend. They seem to be there now.

They always say the IT guys will figure it out. They fix isolated incidents but I've been working with them since 1/04 and I've never witnessed them actually fixing a bug at the root cause so it doesn't recur. I have finally had it.

The bottom line is that they lose things...donations, listings. Sure, they will probably find them again if you catch them and complain (at least, if you get eBay involved) but who has the time to police it?

what was charged to your credit card? Is this is a donated item - ?? The listing fees? Is that what you're talking about?

They take the payment from the buyer - and you ship, right? How can they screw up on that?

I wouldn't touch them with a ten-foot pole at this point - I've had a huge break-up with Paypal - and will NEVER use them again - ebay owns paypal and missionfish.

The buyer pays the seller then the seller pays that money on to missionfish.

and so mission fish charged you the money (and payment) for the auction - before the seller even did?

No, it takes I think two weeks or one week after the auction's end for them to send you an invoice, mission fish that is. It was confusing reading about the second tuesday in the second month after the auction ends....some bullshit like that. They don't charge you before the auction ends because they don't know what it'll end at, like you don't. So after it ends you either wait for the invoice or in my case, wait until the auction appears at mission fish and you pay the amount the auction sold for. Now, it would probably totally suck if the buyer doesn't pay before the invoice comes. But I couldn't imagine someone taking 2 weeks to pay unless they were international buyers.

that's NOT a good way to do business - not at all. They should collect the money from the BUYER- not me, the seller?

hhmmm - this is frustrating -

I thought intially that's how it would have worked too. It's really a clusterfuck of confusion. Thankfully my transaction with them didn't go as bad as it could have, as it obvious from Laura's post.

ya well - I'm not sure I'm in the mood to have them charge me - if the auction goes sour - and the buyer doesn't buy - ya know? again, I'm coming off of 6 years with Paypal - who fucked me royally - not into another bullshit hassle - ya know?

I know, I worried about that too. I put in my auction that payment was required immediately, no exceptions. Thankfully the buyer wasn't a dud. But believe me, the worry was there especially after the auction amount went higher and higher.

Paypal fucked me too a couple years ago after some bitch who bought my Chanel purse decided to charge back her credit card saying she never received the purse. When I tracked the purse (I had a tracking #) it was found sitting in the post office of her city. Paypal said they'd fight the credit card company for me. They didn't and I was out the purse and $600.

they just fucked me on a $137 for a camera that WORKED just fine - the buyer had buyers remorse - and threw a fit - walla - my camera is trashed and I'm out the money -

I will not use paypal again - ever.

That is a real problem. They charge you if the sale is made, whether or not you get paid.

If the buyer doesn't pay, you can apply to have the donation refunded. They keep the money in escrow for about 6 weeks. But, they will only issue a refund after eBay has refunded your FVFs, which can take a couple weeks.

Then, you have to hope & pray you will get through to them in time. The customer service is a joke. I know a couple sellers whose accounts were screwed up for weeks to months. One seller I know for sure did not get a donation refund. They ignored her emails until it was too late then told her she was out of luck because they already paid the charity.

not a gamble I'm willing to take at this point. Can't afford if I lose.

I've decided that with all the money pouring into the katrina fund - I'm going to go with my initial charity - planned parenthood - these good organizations are going to be hurting - and are not receiving donations because of katrina -

so that will be my donation.

Sorry for my delay in responding. I had a ton of stuff to deal with.

ABU is OK. It doesn't set the world on fire with hits & bids but it is free to list and they have some buyers. If you list there and have a mailing list, charity auctions are a good excuse to contact them. I did that and brought over two bidders.

You can list for charity on eBay without going through MF but you have to get a letter from the charity authorizing you to list for them:
