Sigh....they sure don't want to make it easier for artists to make a living on ebay. It is like they would rather just get ride of us entirely. Pretty sad really. I used to like ebay and the whole idea surrounding it, but they are really making it difficult. I still list auctions when I have something new. But it just doesn't make since for me to invest in such a long shot. It is far wiser for me to work on promoting my website rather than a store on feebay.

you don’t have to snipe, it can help sellers too!

ACEOs

I just finished my first 6 attempts at ACEOs and have put a couple of my favorites up in the image gallery. The rest of them (even my first attempts and experiments in media) are in my own image gallery.

I know this is "artists on ebay", but I wanted opinions on which do you think is a better venue for selling? ebay or esty? I can't very well list them on both at the same time. I'm considering esty for the first attempts because, I'll probably start them at 50 cents, 10 for the esty fee and 39 for the stamp. The better ones, however, and the ones I make in the future, as I'm getting better the more I play with this new format, (the progress in these six is pretty obvious), I'm hoping to make a bit more off of them. I don't know if esty will provide enough exposure, or if ebay is an over saturated market?

Input please?

any advice for BEGININNG to sell Art on Ebay

I was hoping if anybody had any advice for an Artist who is just begining to sell art on Ebay? (I tried once for a month to sell 2 pieces and dint get any botes so I gave up.. but I'd like to try again....)

I was hoping to sell 24x36 giclee on canvas prints (as limited editions) on Ebay .. Does anybody have any recommendations? What is ACEO (i saw postings about it?)

Is this a useful place to sell art? Has anybody been able to create a part-time income from selling Art on Ebay? Any info / advice would be most appreciated !

I've recently opened a premium cafepress.com shop. You earn
money from your sells as well as referrals.

In a week of being open I have already earned 12.00... not great
but not bad, and I have also joined the affiliate program which
people have told me has brought in sales for them.

The most important thing is make sure you upload high resolution

I recognized in this store works of FIDO STUDIO and an exact duplicate copy of one of Lunagraphica's ACEO cards El Pescado turned into a giant oil painting. blatant copying "verbatim"

Feeling Crappy/Need Comfort

ok...so my domain name expired.
that is my domain name that is actually my name.

why did i let it expire? i dont know.... but when i went to try to register it again it showed it was still mine i figure it was in limbo and i have to wait a few days... well... when that few days came i was sick and forgot...so the minute it was released some freakin East African company located in Kenya snatched.... seems you make and offer... they want $55 for it....well i am not going to respond to them.

so i decided to see if .Net was available.....i'm a bit anal and prefer .COM .... oh well....

anyway now i decided to go ahead and snatch up .NET and just wait the year or two until my name .COM comes up again.

How many of you have .NET websites? or your name .NET websites? i'm obsessing about no longer having the .com anymore....yeah i know i sound lame..... but help me out here :-(

where to put it?

Im not sure in what catagory+ key words to put my creations?

What I do is: I take a nice looking half rotted tree-branch and make a face on there with self drying clay. So it looks like it comes out of it.
They are fantasy figures like elves, trolls etc.
Then I paint and coat it. Put mos around and make hair with wool.

I came up with fantasy, elves ( or elfs?) troll, nature art.

Any suggestions?

I saw an advertisement in the Oregonian paper the other day. It appears there’s a 90minute e-Bay strategies seminar. It’s free and you get a free digital camera, probably not so good but free is good for me. The advertisement has a Scamy feel to it, like you won a million dollars and all you got to do is come and get. I think there’s something to get out of this so I am going to try. EBay Losing Allure for Some Entrepreneurs

SAN JOSE, Calif. - With roughly 150 million registered users, eBay Inc. ranks among the world's most powerful companies, online or otherwise. It had more than 1.4 billion items listed last year. For every $100 spent online worldwide, $14 was spent on eBay. But some say eBay's blockbuster growth has engendered arrogance.

Entrepreneurs grumble that executives pander to big-ticket electronics vendors and industrial manufacturers — not the teddy bear enthusiasts and numismatists who were faithful a decade ago, when eBay was founded and enjoyed a kitschy obscurity. They complain about shoddy customer service, including site crashes and anti-fraud software that too often mistakes a legitimate business for a huckster.

Meanwhile, eBay executives are looking for new revenue as growth slows in North America and competition heats up from Amazon, Yahoo Inc. (Nasdaq:YHOO - news), Google Inc. and plucky startups. Business experts agree that eBay faces daunting obstacles, such as cracking the nascent Chinese e-commerce market and broadening the audience for PayPal, the online payment division that still does 71 percent of its transactions through eBay.

"They've made good strides but haven't fully monetized other opportunities," said David Edwards, an analyst at American Technology Research in San Francisco. "The nature of a marketplace is that once you have a critical mass, it tends to stick, and there's not a lot that can unseat it. But that's not to say that eBay doesn't have significant challenges ahead."

Jewelry dealer Michael Jansma used to be one of eBay's biggest cheerleaders. The entrepreneur from Largo, Fla., sells roughly $250,000 worth of baubles every month on the auction site. But the revenue Jansma gets from eBay has declined over the past year, and in January the company raised fees, denting his profits.

To compensate, he added inventory on his own site, gemaffair.com, which sells about $60,000 worth of pearls and other luxuries each month. In November, he opened an account with Overstock.com, where he sells $35,000 in merchandise per month. And in February, he began selling on Amazon.com, where sales have more than doubled each month.

"I hope eBay gets the message: People have choices, and if we're not happy we'll look elsewhere," Jansma said. "I hope eBay will rise to the occasion."

EBay foes concede that it would be nearly impossible to eclipse the world's largest online auction company. But that hasn't stopped them from carving out niches where they perceive eBay to be weak.

Take fraud, for example. EBay maintains that less than one-hundredth of 1 percent of all listings are fraudulent, but scammers target high-priced items such as plasma TVs, and some victims have lost thousands of dollars. Although eBay's fraud-detection software alerts internal investigators of suspicious listings, executives say it's impossible to police a site receiving as many as 2,000 new listings per second.

By contrast, Chicago-based UBid Inc. verifies addresses and checks bank references for all 3,700 of its sellers. Service representatives place random orders to ensure prompt delivery, said CEO Bob Tomlinson.

"EBay's taking a hands-off approach to fraud that makes some users uncomfortable," Tomlinson said. "We're taking a hands-on approach."

EBay has also gained a reputation as unresponsive to complaints, a company that acts like an unregulated monopoly and only recently has extended an olive branch.

In mid-January, eBay warned sellers in a terse e-mail that the monthly fee to operate an "Basic eBay Store" would increase from $9.95 to $15.95, and standard listing fees would double, to 40 cents. Sellers peppered eBay executives with angry mail, forcing the company to reduce some fees.

EBay CEO Meg Whitman acknowledges that some of eBay's user relationships have been difficult. But the company, which routinely flies in buyers and sellers for focus groups, has "redoubled" efforts to be innovative, she said.

"Sometimes it's a little bit like being a politician," Whitman said. "We have work to do in understanding our users' sentiments."

Bill Cobb, president of eBay North America, said the company would try to mollify disgruntled sellers with a new rule. If a winning bid comes from someone who has no intention of paying, the seller's rating will not suffer in eBay's "feedback" feature. Sellers often complain of too many fake bidders, particularly on cultural zeitgeist items. For example, in November, a grilled cheese sandwich purportedly depicting the Virgin Mary sold for $28,000, but only after the posting received 1.7 million hits and several astronomical fake bids were eliminated.

Such changes are a departure from the original mission of eBay founder Pierre Omidyar — to create a site that would act as an intermediary between buyers and sellers, devoid of oversight or bureaucracy.

"Pierre never in effect wanted customer support because the marketplace was supposed to work everything out," Cobb said. "But when you scale to 150 million members, you have to account for the margins. Unfortunately you have a very small percentage of people who will try to disrupt the marketplace."

But eBay's contrition may be too late. Salt Lake City-based Overstock.com launched an auction site eight months ago that addresses complaints from eBay sellers partly by charging roughly one-third of eBay's listing and transaction fees. It has 225,000 listings, from tractors to sneakers.

Holly MacDonald-Korth, senior vice president of Overstock auctions, takes calls directly from sellers. By contrast, eBay only stopped sending automated e-mail responses to sellers in February.

"Larger sellers give us a depth of inventory that we need, but the smaller sellers really give us the flavor," MacDonald-Korth said.

Despite the complaints, eBay still maintains an enviable, passionate user base. More than 10,000 sellers converged in San Jose last week for eBay's 10th anniversary, which ended Saturday with a concert by The B-52s.

Glenna Woolard of Santa Cruz, who sported a temporary eBay tattoo and a woven ponytail in eBay's logo colors, has been a seller since 1999. A stay-at-home mother of four, she hawks items purchased from local estate liquidations, garage sales and industrial auctions, with monthly revenue of $3,000.

"EBay takes the 9-to-5 world away, so even someone like me can fit into the economy," Woolard said. She hopes to spend next summer collecting items to sell on eBay while driving cross-country in her Fleetwood Bounder, a mobile home she purchased on eBay for $29,000.

Hallo people,

Last saterday, I started selling on Ebay for the first time. So then I thought it was a good idea to join this tribe. To get some tips from people more experienced.
Im an " old crafts"- artist. Make things with authentic techniques to be used by viking/medieval/renaissance or re-enactors.
I make costume assesoires from felt, sprang, neelbinding.
Also cheap spindels and looms.
Because there is more demand then I can make, I also made a deal with a felting-artist who Im going to do business with. He makes the most FANTASTIC felt. From slippers to rugs.
Also going to sell stuff from my husband. He had a fantasy-games store. And when it closed, all the leftovers went into our basement.

So now you know a bit about me.

ok - so I've been selling on ebay since 99 - never had a problem with my artwork - never had a complaint - zip - nadda - nuthin'. Today I get this threatning little note from some buyer that didn't read the auction - says I changed the auction AFTER she bid - which if I had done that - (don't even think that I can) it would clearly state that I revised the posting. She paid $24 for a fucking print plaque - and says that my auction was misleading.

I'm not even sure why, but maybe she tried to rat out these people? No idea, but I believe these same people took her work and put it on a light switch cover.

I sat here and looked through countless numbers of pages at their listings to see if anything else of mine was being used. I gave up after 19 pages. So this is a head's up if you want to see if your work is being used.

They call them "tribute" pieces, and say you can email them to have the item removed if it's your image they're using. I think that's crap. I'm not making money off of my DA computer scribbles, so I'll be damned if someone else is.

I've never actually tried to sell my art on ebay, nor have any of my artist friends, but it is always one of those "maybe one day I will" type of things. In the past I've sold collector-type stuff (like a Pac-Man purse and video game paraphernalia), but I never unlocked the secret as to what sells - it seems totally random to me. Thus, I'm curious (and this seems like the best place to ask), has anybody here been successful at selling their art on ebay, or anywhere online? And if so, does there seem to be any sort of key to success, like pricing, art type, or whatnot? Thanks!

dried paintbrushes

does anyone know what i can use to help remove the hardness found at the bottom of the paintbrush close to the barrel??

a lot of my acrylic brush seem very hard with just a little bit of flexibility at the tip.

i guess its harden acrylic goo....

does ebay provide a service that appears professional enough?

I never used ebay because I felt their solution looked amateurish (not to insult anyone here), but you can't get around that they get tons of traffic which seems to offset this.

What is your take on this? Is the need for a professional appearance met on ebay and if it is or is not is it balanced or offset by the ecommerce functionality?

I felt so strongly about this I actually started my own service to let artists sell online. I point people to my site not to just buy, but to pursue gallery/community placement & display. I never felt comfortable with the ebay store appearance to do this.
